Mostly irrelevant now. Anodes can and are tested separately. The issues with Li-ion batteries relate almost exclusively to cathodes, electrolytes, electrolyte additives and the solid electrolyte interface. What used to take years of testing now takes a few weeks at most. The graphite is the relatively easy part. Look up Jeff Dahn and his work. Tesla has recently contracted him. I wonder why. Not. He also has made interesting comments about Si and other anodes
