German solar company Sonnen, which is preparing to sell its batteries here, has said it would consider manufacturing in Australia if sales were strong enough. A competitor to Tesla, Redflow and others in the home battery storage market, makes modular, lithium ion modular storage units, ranging in sizes between 2 kWh and 16 kWh. Renew Economy reports that if demand is robust in Australia, then it would consider making its battery cells and integrating them here. These are currently made in Japan by Sony and integrated in Germany. “We are thinking about doing it here in Australia if sales are sufficient,” Australian director Chris Parratt told RenewEconomy last week. “There would definitely be cost benefits to manufacturing it here.” The business, which has a four-tenths market share in Europe and shipped its 10,000th sonnenBatterie system in February, expects to start selling stock in Australia in May. It also operates a peer-to-peer energy trading platform, and is considering introducing this locally.
