I would definitely look at solar with a power bill of over $2k PA
If your states FIT is only around 6-8 cents a kwh and you cant make full use
of the solar production when its sunny, then a battery would probably be
the go as well with your large quarterly bill
In my case the solar system itself is a no brainer financially, the PW2 was
not as financially compelling, in fact at present power prices and Victoria's
new FIT of >11cents, it probably will not break even, I did my figures before
the FIT nearly doubled here in Vic, but when you add the fact that you
will basically have an uninterupted power supply for a decade or more,
(already saved me 4 minor power outages, and resetting of clocks etc)
whole grid stability benefits with the closing of Hazelwood and a bit of
a feel good factor then the PW2 still makes sense for me personally, but
each to their own, depends on how you value that UPS factor I suppose.
The first months figures show that I have drawn a total of 4.4Kwh from the grid
and put 120Kwh back into the grid. This 120Kwh should nearly cover all my
supply charges. But it also tells me that I will probably not get through winter
with only 5.2Kws of panels and I am now looking at adding another few more to the
system (unless tesla updates the software to allow for off-peak charging of
the battery during winter) 6Kw of panels and a 5Kw inverter in Melbourne
is probably pretty optimal to make full use of the PW2
anyway...still learning, so far so good,
cheers grant
