Hey muddy, would you care to produce any references for your battery statement. Tesla offer an 8 year warranty on their batteries (a fail is less than 70% of original capacity) but if you don't drive it like its stolen and try to avoid regular supercharging they will last much longer than that. If you are unlucky and have a failed battery outside warranty it is usually a case of replacing one or 2 modules rather than the whole battery pack anyway.

The early version of those eMMC chips were adequate for the S and X when they were made but now with the increasing load from updates they are starting to fail. Tesla replaces the whole board at a cost of many thousands but a specialised electronic service business can replace the single chip with an improved version for around $400 so although it is an expensive inconvenience it would hardly write of the vehicle.

The annoying part of the whole thing is that Tesla could easily provide an over the air update to reduce the amount of logging the chip has to do but hasn't bothered. Elon should realise that his carefully cultivated cult following isn't guaranteed for ever and that he should ensure that his team attend to matters like this one so his customers stay onside.
