As we already know renewables in Europe and other places in the world are and will displace existing base load sources. The variability is the issue most importantly during winters where wind and shine can be reduced to a smidgen of demand. And this can occur for several months at a time. No battery tech on any reasonable scale can store and deliver the energy required during these times.

    So what solutions are left?

    Power to gas, tidal, geothermal?

I don't think battery tech, or even hydro can help.
