Sometimes, in the very complicated world in which we live, some things are not as clear as one might think. A near dead company with some rather interesting intellectual property that would not like to be seen to fall into the "wrong" hands, gets some unlikely and incomprehensible support from an unknown and hastily erected "tent" entity.
Conspiratorial? Maybe. Part true? I've seen stranger things in my years on the planet..
