The main problem we had before was that the button for displaying the full image in the post was missing, but it's back now and working.
I thought I would try your suggestion anyway, so here goes:
Hmmm. I couldn't do it when copying an image from my desktop. The option to paste it in this post was grayed out so it's not available. I think that's because the desktop icon is only a link to a file elsewhere on the PC.
I then opened the jpeg in the Windows image viewer and copied it from there. The paste option became available on HC but it only uploaded the file without the option to display it, which I think is what happened in your post. We only see a link to the image, which is ok but doesn't get the same attention from readers.
From my experience, if I can see the image displayed in the preview it will always display in the post.
EDIT: I don't see the image or a link using this method although I know the file uploaded, so I think I'll stay with the normal HC process.
