Using family members names is perfectly legit - I didn't do this but would have if I realised the scale-back would be so large.
I (and you) could have applied for two tranches of stock under my own name; one directly to the IPO and one via my broker. I would have had double the stock and perfectly legitimately.
So although I understand your frustration, your criticism of others who played it a bit smarter are not founded.
