Testing kits and essentials not available

Why is it at this late stage there are very few testing kits and also protective gear for medical staff

I have spoken to organizations who care for vulnerable elderly people who can't get supplies of face masks or any protective gear for their staff

I can accept that we import far too much essential gear from overseas, but why early in this crisis didn't the government go to suitable Australian organizations and place urgent orders for items that everyone with half a brain knew would be in short supply from China

Australia has lagged every country in the world and put our population at extreme risk just to make more money from tourists and students, and what's more they have still not woken up to the dangers including misleading messages from our governments medical experts which appear to be spread to mask the deficiencies in the system
