The scenario unfolding as you have described is quite a possibility.
I have often wondered why the drive for renewable energy needs to so heavily linked with the climate change argument in any case. Is the whole strategy misplaced?
In addition to climate change, what about simply wanting to improve the air we breathe in big cities?
What about simply reducing our reliance on non-renewable resources so that if and when they are depleted, or prior to that, the resource is low enough to cause intolerable supply prices, the economy has already made that transition with a mixture of electricity sources. The market mechanism of demand and supply should keep prices down with an appropriate mix.
I don't think Tesler and other pioneers in electricity had climate change in mind when experimenting with electricity sources and transmission!
