Masher, yes there are literally thousands of 'plugged' wells that are planned for re-working. Abandoned is not necessarily true, companies still own them. One example that comes to mind is LEED Pet operating in The Gulf of Mexico, they have been buying P&G wells from operators like BP and re-working them with some success.

As new techniques are developed, these old wells are hoped will still become producers and with newer fraccing technology may even produce more oil than before!
In any event, there is mounting evidence that some 'old' wells are refilling. May explain why the Saudi's often 'rest' a well after a period of extraction, then go back to it?
