To help out with overall asessment of the fundamentals of a particular Co & its management I believe a book reccomendation is in order. 'The Artful Stockpicker' (Wrightbooks), - has been written by a friend of mine 'Peter Hegarty' (former analyst) and will be on the shelves on August 8th.

Here is his blurb:

This book is not afraid to question traditional investment convention.
Nothing is sacred. When the King has no clothes I will let you know.

You will learn some new ways of looking at things. "New ways in the
staid old world of investment?" you ask. You betcha!

Readable? Yep, it contains more fun than ought be allowed in a book on
such a serious subject, but at no time will your intelligence be insulted.

But does it have any practical suggestions? Yes, plenty. And it tells
you about pitfalls you never thought of.

Is it just theory or can it be applied to the real world? It's real all
right. The second half of the book works you through a sample of
nineteen stocks from my own portfolio - the good, the bad and the
strugglers.

Does it take a fundamental or technical approach? Both, but the emphasis
is on fundamentals - but more important - which fundamentals matter most.

Charting is not a major part of the book and is offered very much as an
option. It can be by-passed with no penalty. But if you are into
charting, or at least have an open mind, then you will find it explained
to you here as you never have before - guaranteed!

Is it the best Australian book ever written on share market investing? I
hope so, I did not set out to write the second best. But I hope you will
make up your own mind then come back and tell me what you think.
