While the jury is obviously still out on how this occurred, this just reinforces my opinion that they dont really understand the hydrogeology. As this issue continues to be unresolved the site itself will continue to be a bug-bear.
Before the 'how' is determined, I would like to know the wall that is exposed as the larger pit interfaces with the plant as well as the mine. If its not this wall then it could be river-facing. In my opinion this is not an issue as there it no way the site could contaminate that river(due to distance). In saying that, if something has opened up underground the dam could be leaking.
