Rioting threatens to mar April gains

The second quarter opened with sales of 57,218 vehicles in April taking the four-month total this year to 223,903 units for a growth of 51.8% over the same period last year.

According to a Toyota report, sales of passenger cars and pickups grew by 54.3% and 46.5% respectively compared to the corresponding period last year.

But analysts were cautious when asked to forecast haul for 2010, citing rioting in the streets and escalating tension in Bangkok which, they said, in all likeliness will undermine their earlier estimate for the first-half as well as the whole year, which they put between 610,000-650,000 units.
