Thailand lifts emergency laws

Thailand has finally lifted emergency laws that have been in place in Bangkok since civil unrest in April and May.
The laws restricting public gatherings and allowing people to be held by authorities without charge were imposed during anti-government Red Shirt protests in the capital.
Controversially, they have been in place ever since despite allegations the government has used the powers to restrict opposition media and political activity.
The government says the laws were retained due to intermittent minor bombings in Bangkok and three nearby provinces since the height of the protests.
The government says it does not expect further unrest in the immediate future, however the laws can be re-imposed if required.
