To many, what matters is ousting this PM from the leadership, replacing him with a conservative, getting the Liberal Party back on track and stopping the rot that has set in since 2015.
From the poll and election numbers, you are talking about the lost legions of conservatives - over 10% of total voters, so 1.6 million plus.
So, for many, they don't see it as a simple two horse race as you put it. Many accept the next election, at least, is lost so ousting Turnbull is a far higher priority. They will vote for minors unless or until the Libs reform.
I voted elsewhere in the Senate in 2016. At the next election I will do so also in the HofR. Saving the Liberal brand is more important than the next election to me . I am sure I am not Robinson Crusoe.
My vote is pretty much decided.

I fear the flaw in that thinking is that when conservatives wrest back control of the Liberal Party they will come to see that the nation has moved on and conservative values will not win any elections inside decades imo.
This is a conservative’s blind spot.
