TransCore and MIKOH Announce Joint Development of Next-Generation Windshield Sticker Tags for Wireless Communications

DALLAS and Washington D.C., June 26, 2003 – TransCore, a leader in ground transportation management systems and the largest global manufacturer of transportation-based radio frequency identification (RFID) products commonly used for electronic toll collection, and MIKOH Corp., a wholly owned subsidiary of Australian parent company MIKOH Corp. Ltd. (ASX:MIK) and the developer of the Smart&Secure™ RFID label and tag technology, today announce they are developing an enhanced paper-thin windshield sticker tag for use in emerging large-scale applications, such as homeland security border crossings, electronic emissions monitoring, secure vehicle access control and expanded mobile commerce applications. The alliance will combine TransCore’s wireless paper-thin communications RFID technology with MIKOH’s secure label and printing technologies. Rollout of the initial collaborative offering is expected during first quarter of 2004.
Initially the companies will focus on electronic vehicle registration compliance applications in the United States, Mexico, Central & South America and Asia. Per the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) in the United States alone, there are more than 230 million registered vehicles in the United States alone, representing approximately $14.4 billion in total annual vehicle registration revenues. Alternately, an estimated five to 10 ten percent of vehicles are not legally registered, resulting in lost annual state revenues of between $720 million and $1.44 billion that could be recovered through the use of wireless systems for monitoring registration compliance.

With the growing market demand for low-cost tags combined with the proven appeal of electronic-based transactions such as electronic toll collection and mobile commerce, TransCore will incorporate MIKOH’s Smart&Secure technology in its RFID tag offering because of the technology’s tamper-resistant security, low cost, compact design, and suitability for high-volume manufacturing, The jointly developed product will be deployed in large-scale applications and used as a replacement technology in existing markets.

In addition to tamper resistance, TransCore will be able to provide customized information on its windshield tags, including individual logos and unique branding. MIKOH’s MIS ink-jet printing technology will be employed to print individualized numbers and barcodes on the tags where required. Both technologies bring distinct advantages, allowing user-specified variable information to be incorporated into a physically secure label design.

"Reliable low-cost tamper prevention capabilities are an obvious and important requirement in a number of our growing markets, especially with the current heightened level of security awareness," said George McGraw, TransCore’s executive vice president of technology delivery. "Yet, we also see that our customers are looking for greater flexibility to include their own variable information on the tags. The relationship with MIKOH will bring a range of market differentiators to TransCore’s vehicle-based RFID tag products."

Peter Atherton, CEO of MIKOH’s U.S. subsidiary, added, "MIKOH’s technologies and capabilities are an excellent fit with market requirements as well as complementary to TransCore’s established expertise and experience."
