Mitchells launches social media unit


The Mitchell Communication group has launched a social media unit to help clients understand and create campaigns for social networking and other digital media.


The new division will draw staff from across the group when needed, primarily from Media Contacts and PR agencies Haystac and Spark Communications.

Marcio Nery, innovation manager at Media Contacts, will head the unit, in conjunction with Richard Chapman, managing director of Spark and Kelly Drew, Sydney general manager of Haystac.

The social media unit is already working on five different proposals for clients, although it would not name the brands involved. It will be aimed at existing clients, rather than be used to pitch for new business.

Nick Behr, managing director of Media Contacts, told B&T Today: “We want to be ahead of the market, which I think we are, but we also want to educate clients on how to use social media.

“We have clients who ask us regular questions on social media and the first step is to set some hard objectives. That’ll vary for each client, they may just want a Facebook page, but there will be others that will put some real money behind it to create a buzz online.”

Behr said that the division has been modelled on similar entities in the UK and US launched by Havas, Mitchells’ partner in the Australian arm of media agency MPG.

“We’ve got a lot of learnings from the US and UK as to how this will work,” he said. “We’ll have to wait and see, but I think that social media and its other elements, such as SEO and creative, will be something that lasts.”
