All this trawling of the literature is all very well, but the Egyptian military occupation and build up on Sharm al Sheik in the Gulf of Aqaba was no peace loving act. The island is within sight of the Israeli shore. This particular act was perhaps the most provocative that could be imagined at the time, and I can well remember the tensions since I happened to be in the vicinity when it occurred. If it was just posturing, then it was rather unwise, don't you think?
