your friend who professes to avoid investing in mining in SA doesn't invest AND doesn't know much "about this sort of thing"
a lot of work has been done between WWI and the local African population (with 1/3 of the mine under black empowerment ownership) to secure support in this regard
I'd say don't listen to your mate, and do your own research
