As many have alluded to, the thinking is to sell this down the line. Now one my ask why they didn't try go beyond the current depth and try to profile the whole lot (historical 12.8m oz)? Well, for one...the DFS wouldn't be a few months out (and I can only imagine the winging on this forum) and probably no EMI to generate cash flow. Also, I have never played poker, but Im pretty sure you don't show your hand at the onset. Let any suitors stew on it, value that potential 7 or 8 million oz that has been talked about and then come to the table with offers. Thats just my opinion.
