The ABC Q&A, your paying for this

from one panellist brought the house down.

British poet Kate Tempest stole the show with her blunt, straight-talking style, but it was her final performance that gripped the audience.

Host Tony Jones warned some might find the content in Ms Tempest’s poemProgress offensive, with lyrics musing on “the singer’s last twitch before she blows herself to bits” and “young people getting f***ed”.

Other lines included: “All we have is surplus to what’s needed and we feed our callous little urchins in the best ways that we can and then we wonder how they’ve grown to only to know what’s in their hands.

“The world is your playground, go and get your kicks as long as you’re not poor or ugly or sick.
“They’ll put you on the screen if you’ve got nice t**s.”

Twitter user Sammy Snail said the spoken word performance “brought tears to my eyes!” while Tash Spong agreed it “made me blooming teary!”

Others called it “brilliant”, “transcendent” and “remarkable”.

The thought-provoking moment in a show presented in partnership with the Sydney Writers’ Festival made quite a change to the usual political debates, with one viewer commenting: “Pyne closing poetry should be worth waiting for next week.”

Some found the act confronting, however, calling it “horrific” and a “rant”.
