So far Hunter Biden story more sideshow than showstopper
Instead of being straight with the American people, the President has tried every trick in the book to shift the attention away from the reality of COVID-19.
His latest attempt to reset the narrative was telegraphed days out from the debate as a "bombshell" that would prove Biden was corrupt to the core.
The story — first published by the Murdoch-owned New York Post last week — doesn't appear to be Russian "disinformation", as claimed by the Democrats, including Joe Biden on Friday (AEDT).
Tony Bobulinski, a former business partner of Biden's son, Hunter, has confirmed he was the recipient of emails that purportedly described the vice-president as the "Big Guy" in business deals being sought in China.
But the emails are dated May 2017, when Biden was no longer serving as vice-president.
In an echo of the tactics of 2016, when Bill Clinton's female accusers were in the audience as Trump debated Hillary Clinton, Bobulinski was invited to Friday's event as a guest of the President.
Minutes before the debate started, Bobulinski faced the cameras to give the laptop story a boost.
"I've heard Joe Biden say that he's never discussed business with Hunter. That is false," he told the assembled press.
But when the matter came up in the debate, Biden simply pointed out he had released all of his tax returns and none of them showed anything untoward.
"Go look at them, 22 years of my tax returns," he said, before pointing at the President.
"You have not released a single, solitary year of your tax returns … Release your tax returns or stop talking about corruption."
