The ALP went full opportunist prior to WW1. They were never more than fair weather friends whose members have mastered the art of speaking out of both sides of their mouths simultaneously.
The ALP was built by unions to represent the working class but the petty bourgeois very quickly injected themselves into the political ranks where they enjoyed the opportunities.
So today they are baying after the politically diseased children who are pouring out of stalinised schools. They are promised by their focus groups that the working class will continue to vote for them if they disguise their crazed stalinised policies. Being for and against coal simultaneously is a walk in the park.
