They deliver $millions in aid to many countries around the world, some of whom cannot wait to criticise them when it suits. They are condemed for not sending enough food or medicine to the Iraqi people who burn their flags while the medicine and food is withheld by their own government. No one can believe that the Iraqis would not be better off with anyone else but Hussein. The countries who condem the US would scream for their assistance the second they were in danger. No body wants war but avoiding unpalatable choices does not always bring satisfactory results. The US are finding this out now because they took the politically "safe" option with Iraq before by not driving in to Bahgdad and finishing the job and are now still having to deal with them. As far as bugging phones , ELINT aircraft can pick up much more than phone bugs and the like. All mobile phone calls are monitored and responses are triggered by key words. Thats how they got much of the evidence about who did what in the attack on 11 September.
