To be competitive economically, GEOs like PTR/GDY need to increase efficiency in every way possible. Even according to a conservative estimate of 10% increased efficiency, the Kalina cycle is an extremely attractive prospect.

Why reinvent the wheel? Well, the wheel is coal, and you know why we have to reinvent it, or you wouldn't be posting on this thread. The problem is, almost too obviously to write, coal is so much cheaper. To lower the estimated 6cents/kWh, companies must explore new methods. Kalina has never been applied on the scale GDY is talking about, but estimates and models are promising.

I agree being close to customers is fantastic for both increasing percentages and reducing development risk, but you cannot just write off the Kalina cycle because it is not as thoroughly established.

How long has Rankine been around? About 20-30 years off the top of my head. And what were peole saying then? Why reinvent the wheel....

If operating costs are estimated @ 1c/kWh, and electricity costs are 5c/kWh, even a 10% increase in efficiency brings the total down to 5.5c/kWh.

So its the difference between 5.5c and 6c. A scenario like this could decide who the majors are in a few years time....

Best to cover both bases for now, as almost all we can do is speculate - a bit of diversification may pay off. Geothermal power has never been produced in this way on anywhere near the scale these companies are trying.
