NO decision has been made on what mining would be excluded from the Tarkine, federal Environment Minister Tony Bourke says.

His comments followed a report in The Australian yesterday that the federal government intended to excise a number of leases for which there were well- developed mining proposals but not yet operational mines from the heritage listing.

The report said exclusions included plans by Western Australia's Venture Minerals for up to three open-cut mines in areas that include old-growth rainforest and Tasmanian devil habitat.

But Mr Bourke yesterday stressed that he was still working through the issues.

"A final decision is yet to be made," he said.

Braddon Liberal MHA Adam Brooks yesterday said the Greens would not be satisfied with anything less than a complete shutdown of Tasmania's mining and forestry industries.

Greens leader Christine Milne was quoted in the same article as Mr Bourke as saying: "It's the classic scratch across the face of the Mona Lisa, the scratch may be just 0.01 per cent of the Mona Lisa but you've destroyed everything."

    That angered Mr Brooks.

"(The report) said that the federal government wants to lock up 400,000 hectares of the so-called Tarkine - that's 90 per cent of the area that the Greens have been campaigning to lock up," Mr Brooks said.

"Yet, according to Senator Milne, locking up even 99.99 per cent ... would not be enough.

"The Liberals will oppose any more lock-ups of Tasmania."

State Resources Minister Bryan Green said the government was unwavering in its support of Tasmania's mining industry.

"The mining industry is crucial to Tasmania's economy and the government is doing everything possible to promote investment and jobs in the sector," Mr Green said.

"We are seeing record levels of exploration and new projects progressing to the mine stage, and we want that to continue.

"The government remains strongly opposed to a blanket heritage listing of the Tarkine."
