Graphite stocks

THE only difference between Korea's Gangnam Style and graphite is that one of them is a Korean song-and-dance hit while the other is an industrial metal with numerous new-age applications.

Other than that, they're the big hits of 2013 - although, like all crazes, interest is waning.

In the case of graphite, most of the stocks we last visited in May are well off the pace, such as Talga Resources (TLG), Castle Minerals (CDT) and Archer Exploration (AXE). Syrah Resources (SYR) continues to do well on the back of its unusually rich and thick Balama prospect in Mozambique.

Uranex (UNX, 8c) is oriented to uranium, but yesterday reported a "significant" discovery of flake graphite in northern Tanzania. Management isn't gambling on graphite prices staying at a heady $US3000 a tonne, with uranium, coal, gold and base metal targeted as well.

Uranex shares vaulted almost 25 per cent on the news, only to end slightly in the black.
