Everybody has an opinion...I read that you IM have a very distinct view that the two should not be executed.
I guess in reality and in honesty I have a view that if you break a law of the land, any law, made to protect it's citizens where ever you are, and the consequences of breaking that law are very very clear...then the expectation would be that you pay the advertised price or penalty if you are caught.
We all make mistakes yes, in some cases we can learn from our mistake and never make the same mistake again. If the consequence of that mistake is loss of life such as in a car accident then it isn't likely you will make the same mistake again.
But...was knowingly attempting to move drugs for payment a "mistake" that when caught and penalised you might learn from that mistake?
Like knowingly shooting some one, but then when caught and told you will pay the penalty realise it was mistake to shoot that person and you promise not to do it again?
The biblical punishment of an eye for an eye or a tooth for a tooth doesn't have a place here, as the two men did not directly take a life or injure some one...a consequence of their actions may well have cost some one somewhere there life or some other loss or injury.
My question would be; what punishment should there be for international drug running? Should there be an "International" penalty applied regardless of what country you are caught in?
What punishment could be tabled that would be a real deterrent to some one prepared to break the law to make a quick buck?
Would life in prison deter all from having a go at getting rich quick through international drugs movement? I personally don't think so...I am sure there are a whole lot more rat bags, thieves and liars in a country with a population of over 240 million people...hence a harsh law to deter people from drug running.
Why aren't we all up in arms about the all other men that have been executed by this very same sovereignty over the past few weeks? Would we prefer that anybody regardless of nationality or the depth of their involvement in trafficking drugs into Australia or any other country be given gaol time only...IF they get caught?
How much of a deterrent would it honestly be to hardened criminals if the penalty for trafficking hard drugs was a lifetime at the Queens pleasure...ie: gaol time with your own room and bed and breakfast. Unfortunately if you lay with dogs you will soon get fleas, these guys knew the consequences, they didn't attempt to traffic the drugs oblivious to the penalties.
I am truly sorry for these blokes for trying this one and getting caught, I am more sorry for their family as they had no say in what these blokes did. But I am damn sure if they had rung up their family members and asked them whether they should have a go at running some drugs for money the family would have said no way...if you get caught you will be sentenced to death!
Sorry IM, I am sympathetic, but I also don't break laws...
