Well even that option could prove pretty useful if a remote small (say 10MW) generating plant can "punch above its weight" by providing the peak capacity of associated with bigger base load plant (say 20 to 40MW) by virtue of incorporating VRBs ... only probably have 2x2hr peak periods each day when supporting remote residential infrastructure.
Given that coal seams suitable for ucg will range from remote to near urban locations, a case for ucg with or without VRBs could be mounted ... remote locations could power coal mine projects and infrastructure towns 100's to 1000's of km from any electrical grid.
By the way, I find the current price and volume machinations quite encouraging.
