NEW YORK, March 12 (Reuters) - U.S. stocks opened higher on Wednesday, helped by gains in heavy-equipment maker Caterpillar Inc (CAT.N: Quote, Profile, Research) after it raised its forecast for 2010 revenue.
The Dow Jones industrial average .DJI was up 40.22 points, or 0.33 percent, at 12,197.03. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index .SPX was up 1.04 points, or 0.08 percent, at 1,321.69.
