I'm not sure i completely understand the reference to the naughty corner... it isn't just adds and deletes that cause trading for index rebalances, but also changes in share counts. For foreign domiciled companies with CDIs, the change in CDIs makes a difference, which is why NEM and URW had such large net sell trades from the indexes. It's a nice liquidity event for anyone looking to get large licks of stock or offload in one go, as all the liquidity providers (think Millenium or Citadel) turn up to make some money.
