    Hello all,
Neo's post last night suggesting you may be able to hear something Bunya rather than see it got me thinking. I managed to find some info about the start up procedure and yes Country Writer the air compressor may well be running for sure, not just pressuring up though, drying the coal so ignition can happen and no, i have no idea how long it takes to dry a few million yrs of moisture from coal.I'm sure instrumentation somewhere will confirm water content and alert all when the time is right.
Now the noise- a compressor for this service i imagine will be quite large and yes it may well be able to be heard from some distance hammering away if it is a reciprocating(piston type) Country Writer. It could also be a rotary compressor which will emit a constant and much higher pitched noise. The operating philosophy for these larger machines is usually that they run at or close to full speed constantly.Discharge pressure and flow is controlled by a vent on the discharge-as this vent is slowly closed it will force more air into the process. So another noise-air venting even when silenced can be quite loud.
Hope this is of some help to one and of interest to all

    Bruce
