The above replies are lovely and pertinent.
All the replies have taken the view of the animal, which is beautiful to see.
My first family dog had a hole in the heart when we first got him. After 1 week we couldn't take him back to where we bought him as we knew what his fate would be. We looked after him and loved him until his final breath 2 years later. Cost us alot of money but was worth it...
Have had to put down 2 other dogs since then and is never an easy decision. You love them like your own family and unfortunately like the above comment says, you get selfish and think of yourself rather than the animal.
Luckily dogs can be put to a peaceful sleep, unlike watching your human family member slowly deteriorate in front of your eyes without being able to make the "right" decision.
It is hard to tell when a dog is in pain as they hide it well from you.. Please keep in close contact with your vet and allow him/her to make a professional judgement and whent the time comes, have the strength and courage to do the right thing.
My three dogs I had cremated and are still part of the family in boxes on the mantle...
One of my current dogs is getting on to 13 years. Have spent $4000 on a crucia ligament operation on her a few years back. Eventually we will have to say goodbye to her also. I'm dreading the day....
Warm wishes..
