    Most of those countries are broke, run by dictators or failed states.

    The USA owns theirs because it's traditional and it's used as a tourist attraction. Gold was a big deal a couple of hundred years ago, but when I can buy exposure to almost anything on the planet from the comfort of my office, it's a non-event.
