Professor Alan Husband, Novogen's research director, says that NV-06 expands on technology that the company used when it was developing Trinovin, an over-the-counter dietary supplement based on a group of natural compounds called isoflavones .Novogen began researching isoflavones because of a link between the low incidence of prostate cancer and other diseases in people who live in cultures in which isoflavone-rich foods - such as beans, peas and sprouts - are prevalent in the diet. From this observation and its own research, Novogen claims that Trinovin is effective in the prevention of prostate cancer. But the company believes it has gone one step further with NV-06 and found a treatment."NV-06 is based on what we now understand to be a range of hormones produced after ingesting isoflavones," Husband says. "After screening these isoflavone metabolites, we discovered one that had anti-cancer properties. NV-06 is a synthetic analogue of this."Husband says that in animal trials, NV-06 was effective at fighting prostate cancer and had very few side effects. Trials have begun to establish what dosages will be therapeutic in humans, and whether they will have any side effects.
