Or animal welfare, poverty - or whatever it is that makes you feel compassion, empathy and the other useful emotions. Richard Dawkins would have it that our genes are inherently selfish by design and drive us to create environments that please us as individuals and only the social contract stops us doing exactly what we want, when we want. Not a very optimistic human backdrop but maybe he's right.
