With regard to your mates comments his history is incorrect, Chiang Kai Shek was the leader of the Kuo Min Tang who formed a provisional government after the overthrow of the Quing dynasty, he wasn't a general under Mao and Taiwan certainly wasn't gifted to him or his party.
Regarding the easy to invade difficult to hold comment - China has demonstrated no difficulty holding Tibet since 1950.
If you google Chinese territorial disputes the Chinese have claims on every one of their neighbours to one degree or another. As a parallel Hitler/Third Reich only "repatriated what was rightly German" (Rhineland, Saarsland, Sudetanland, Austria) prior to invading Poland.
As I stated in my initial post though I sincerely hope that I'm way off the mark.
