Forget inflation as the driver of gold. The first sign of any country (like say , Panama, Mongolia, UAE etc) backing their currency with gold and then making it digital through blockchain, would surely get the gold bulls pumped.
Or, even better................what if someone were to back a digital bitcoin with gold. Wouldn't that set the cat among the pigeons!
