@CaptainGrumpy - I had it in my mind that the gold price and the US dollar had moved together but looking roughly back over quite some years really the only time I could find was 1975/77 when they both went down. But that was just a quick look. But even if it has never happened before, then it doesn't mean it can't happen now. But I still have some doubts.

@cha - I know I have been saying that the key is the US dollar but I wouldn't dismiss the effect of the bonds. That is still the biggest market of all and pressure can often start there and with debt levels still exploding in the US, I worry about funding. Also any threat by perhaps China to unload bonds in a big way, could be disastrous.

And as they say - we live in interesting times.....
