Not sure if you know this (came up on QI once) Bleak House is based on a couple of true legal cases, one of which - Jennens v Jennens - was the contesting of a rich man's will.
This started in 1798 and lasted until 1915 (117 years!!). The case only stopped because the legal fees eventually drained all assets held by the estate.
