When AGL Energy’s then-CEO, Andy Vesey, outlined in 2017 how the company would replace the generation capacity to be lost with the closure of the Liddell Power Station, the line-up included some 750 megawatts of gas power, a 250 MW battery at the site and a potential pumped hydro venture. An LNG import project was also envisaged in Victoria.As Liddell heads for a shutdown by April 29, none of this has happened.

With Liddell closed, there is less of a safety margin to meet demand during peak consumption periods in NSW, which already regularly imports electricity from Victoria and Queensland.
