I dumped on the Tasmanian Magnesium Project earlier.

Their source is:
Magnesite: a magnesium carbonate mineral with a chemical composition of MgCO₃. For every atom of magnesium a whole molecule of carbon dioxide is released.
Molecular Weight MgCO₃ = 84.31 gm
Molecular weight Magnesium =24.3

This means for every 84.3 grams of MgCO₃, or for every 24 grams of final magnesium metal, 44 grams of carbon dioxide is released, almost 2:1 - minimum.
Process electrical energy, transport extraction/mining etc energy consumption still needs to be added in. The Tasmanian project is a dumb project.

Jindalee Resources reported on their resource before GWR arrived all hot and bothered:

.Jindalee engaged Stewart Capp to review this earlier resource estimate and to report the resource estimate in accordance with the JORC Code (2012) if possible. As a result of this review, at a lower cut-off grade of 40% MgO, an Inferred Resource was estimated which totals 25 million tonnes of fresh magnesite grading 42.4% Mgo, 4.8% SiO2, 1.4% Fe2O3 and 2.6% CaO to an average depth of 100m below the surface

Mining it means roughly 7m tonnes Mg and nearly 14 m tonnes of CO2 are released.

Compare with LMG using electric furnaces using renewable energy sources and a resource that does not release CO2 (because the ash in the coal was burnt in the power station boiler releasing any and all CO2 when the (brown) coal was burnt decades ago, so now has no CO2 in the ash. The metal ions now exist as oxides which is why the LMG process uses acid to react with the ash.

LMG will produce 10,000 tpa magnesium locally and only a few tens of CO2 tpa from haulage trucks. Big difference to Tasmania.
Later LMG's 100,000 tpa plants located overseas will use ferronickel slag dumps, also free of CO2 burned off years ago when extracting the nickel. Same almost near zero CO2 emissions.
