In the past few years the management of SSM have made some major blunders (in my opinion of course),two with the greatest impact were Mccourt Dando fiasco- cost SSM $15 million approx.and Sytheo joint venture, do we know the full cost?? These loses were the result of moving away from their core business--that of being a reliable service business!! So what makes me optimistic now. THEY HAVE A NUMBER OF THINGS GOING FOR THEM. (ONE)Hopefully they have learned the hard lessons of the past and now stick to core business. (TWO)I believe their business is basically defensive, telecommunications networks are essential infratructure. (THREE)It is a low margin contract business, this may seem counterintuative but being low margin makes it difficult for other contractors to grab work off them, they would have to work on even narrower margins. (FOUR)Mining boom over at moment skilled workers will not be as hard to retain. (FIVE)Involvement of Thorney opportunities (TOP)they intend to be activist in the businesses the invest in. (SIX) After the capital raise debt under control. (SEVEN)Growth oppotunities mergers/takeovers of similar type busisness. (EIGHT)Finally, as a investor living in New Zealand if the share price does not move in the next two years but the NZ dollar moves back to its historical average of 75 cents I will be still looking at a 15-30 per cent return,!! and O NO CAPITAL GAINS TAX either.
