the catalaxy files on literary awards

Start of a thread on the Catalaxy website about Campbell Newman's decison to axe the Qld Literary Award.

    ---------------
Henry Ergas and George Megalogenis are engaged in an exchange of views on the impact of cancelling the Queensland premier’s literary award.

Here is George M starting the argument.

The question for Newman is whether the gain from not hosting a cocktail party for authors would exceed any offsetting losses in GST collections from book sales in Queensland.

    Here is Henry’s reply.

That is absurd. To begin with, what does Megalogenis think consumers will do with the money they would have otherwise spent on award-winning books? Spend it all on (GST exempt) fresh food, hence reducing the GST take? In other words, is Megalogenis suggesting the closest substitutes for books that win the Queensland Premier’s literary award are cabbages?

Don't you love these subsidy junkies, so... before literary awards Queenslanders didn't buy books?
