It makes good sense that Qantas may have difficulty surviving. Few companies could cope with years of unexpectedly low revenue and high fixed costs. Many airlines have gone broke in normal times.
The ace that Qantas has is its call on the public purse. It was worth noting that while many industries were under severe stress during Covid and many mum and dad businesses were allowed to fail the government yielded to special pleading from Qantas.
Qantas nurtures this "Special Icon" status. The jingoistic music, the Kangaroo..
But its best investment is giving every politician Chairman's Club membership. Its a nice bribe that they all want to keep getting.
