If you are old enough you would remember a similar thing being said in the late 60s/early 70s about Jap cars & trucks & have a gander on what we've got now eh?
I visited a Great Wall/Haval dealership last Saturday and salesmen were signing up deals with their sleeves rolled up as if there was no tomorrow! There were single cab diesel utes or dual cab petrol utes all with alloy trays $19,999 drive away with "Sorry I'M sold " tags all over the shop.
The Japs began like this. I remember Toyota Corollas being sold for half the price of a Holden and the music radio was not an added accessory! Detractors then were saying that Corollas were scrap Hiroshima matchboxes but look at them now. A Corolla is worth more than a Commodore or a Falcon of similar age/miles but alot cheaper to have bought new.
I guess the V-Facts stats for 2020 will tell the tale of Great Wall/Haval..eh?
