I think its more a case of the new design has a disposable plastic cassette so they don't have to throw away the heater, timer, battery and leds with they preparation tray. They charge the same or more and improve the margin slightly.
I'm surprised they haven't marketed it as "more environmentally friendly". But the addressable market is still saturated unless it becomes popular for cosmetic procedures.
