It's hard to figure out when CSL became profitable, as I believe it only became a public company in the 90s.
But seeing as it was founded in 1916, and its profit in 1994 was $18m, I'd guess there was a decent period of growth and development during those 68 years that they were not profitable.
Favoring growth over profit is kinda the point of a growth stock.
