That consideration would have no influence upon these surgical decisions at all. Surgeons couldn’t care less about hospital profit or loss except in the abstract; moreover these figures would not normally be known to surgeons and other care providers because they would have no interest in ferreting them out. They have far more productive ways to use their time.
IF there would be any pressure to use one product over another it would come from the cost bearing entities - the insurers. How their influence is made to be felt I do not know; they are not likely to interfere directly in surgical decisions, however they may support or underwrite educational initiatives… Eventually they may start reducing eligible costs for reimbursement for the procedure and THAT get a lot of attention very quickly.
